Purpose:

Athene is seeking a Legal and Compliance Intern who is a self-starter, assertive, confident, and enthusiastic to be part of our Legal & Compliance Teams in our West Des Moines, IA office for the 2025 summer. This internship position is an excellent opportunity for a student who is currently pursuing a JD and would like to learn more about the financial services industry. The internship will report to Senior Legal Counsel but will work with both our Legal and Compliance areas throughout the summer.

Internships will run from mid-May to early August

These are in-office internships at our West Des Moines located at 7700 Mills Civic Parkway.

Interviews and hiring decisions expect to be completed prior to mid-November, with some being completed as early as late September.

Accountabilities:

  • Researching various regulatory obligations and/or rule proposals, to help assess their impact on Athene

  • Assisting with various aspects of Athene’s compliance program, which is primarily focused on meeting the Company’s obligations as a financial service provider

  • Assisting Compliance Team with documentation reviews, updating the compliance calendar and other administrative tasks

  • Researching federal and state insurance laws in various states

  • Drafting legal memoranda

  • Assisting the Legal Team with day-to-day operations

  • Collaborating with internal and external partners and personnel; and

  • Assisting with ad-hoc legal and compliance projects and requests

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualified candidates must be enrolled at an accredited law school for Fall term 2025

  • Individuals currently pursuing a Juris Doctorate.

  • Available to work full time for 10-12 weeks from mid-May to mid-August

  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Manages work assignments to meet deadlines

  • Ability to handle confidential information

  • Works effectively with others in a collaborative team environment

  • Strong Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
