This position is responsible for assisting the Summer Day Camp Site Leader and fostering a sense of Belonging in Campers, providing opportunities for Campers to feel Achievement, and helping Campers build healthy positive Relationships.

  • Support the direction provided by the Camp Site Leader.

  • Fills the role of Site Leader when the Site Leader is not there.

  • Assist in creating a camp atmosphere that fosters a sense of Belonging among campers, helps them gain confidence through Achievement and builds Relationships with and among campers.

  • Assist in creating and maintaining a safe environment both physically and emotionally for all Campers

  • Help to establish a relaxed, unstructured feel to camp activities, with more emphasis on the how and the why of the activities than on the activities themselves.

  • Help to lead, supervise, evaluate and provide feedback for camp staff team.

  • Help ensure planning is in place for Choice Activities, Large Group Activities and Club Time.

  • Help to engage Camp Leaders and Campers in the planning of activities.

  • Assist with planning and orchestrating camp’s daily flow.

  • Help to make sure schedules, supplies, materials, etc. are ready for each day of camp.

  • Maintain the Y-Voice in all that you say, do, and think in regards to your camp program Welcoming, Nurturing, Hopeful, Determined, Genuine.

  • Establish positive relationships with Campers and parents.

  • Help to plan and lead Team Meetings in a way that reflects the values you want to see in camp.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions

  • American Red Cross CPR-PR/AED/First Aid Certifications or equivalent certifications approved by the YMCA

  • American Red Cross Blood Borne Pathogens Training or equivalent training approved by the YMCA

  • Y Leaders Orientation

  • Approved Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Certification

  • Must be at least 18 year of age

  • One to two years previous day camp or child care counselor experience

  • Completion of Health History Form

  • YMCA Day Camp Safety Training

  • YMCA Online Day Camp Training


  • Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively with people and monitor property and activity

  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity

  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
