Job Description

Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services – Rehabilitation Services Bureau is looking to support a student in an internship experience with our team. We are interested in energetic, action-oriented master degree students interested in being part of a statewide team dedicated to serving the needs of employers and assisting individuals with disabilities to achieve employment, independence, and economic goals. We have office locations across the state available for your internship site and are flexible on work schedule to meet your needs.

In this role, you will serve as a Rehabilitation Counselor Intern and contribute your experience and knowledge towards fulfilling our Mission – We provide expert, individualized services to Iowans with disabilities to achieve their independence through successful employment and economic support alongside your IVRS team.

As a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Intern, you will work on increasing employment and advancement opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Interns help youth and adults with disabilities live fuller, more independent lives by assisting them in securing gainful employment. They provide a continuum of professional services designed to remove barriers and help clients achieve success. Through vocational guidance and counseling, counselors assist clients in determining employment goals, identifying services and resources, and preparing for employment and job searches. In addition, counselors develop and maintain relationships with community partners, including job centers, schools, service providers and employers.

Duties and responsibilities with supervision and training include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide counseling and guidance to empower people with disabilities to achieve their employment goals;

  • Determine eligibility for VR services by obtaining and analyzing relevant medical information, and identifying the disability-related barriers to employment that require VR services;

  • Prepares and maintains records and case files, including documentation such as participant's personal and eligibility information, services provided, medical records, narratives of participant contacts and other relevant correspondence;

  • Support individuals with disabilities to identify their job-related goals and to develop individual plans for employment;

  • Determines a comprehensive variety of services, which may include training, physical/mental restoration, assistive technology, benefits planning, supported employment and job placement;

  • Assist persons served with identifying their strengths and abilities; adjust to disability; exercise informed choice; maintain progress through their individual plans; and understand labor market trends and employment opportunities; and

  • Contact and develop relationships in the business industry in order to provide employment opportunities and placements for participants in a competitive employment setting, while providing services to businesses to assist in achieving their labor goals.

    IVRS has office locations across the state.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current master degree student in one of the following areas:

  • Rehabilitation Counseling

  • Social Work

  • Mental Health Counseling

  • Teaching

  • Business

  • Similar or related field of study

This is a non-merit internship position with the Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
