Job Description

I am Energy! Are you? Alliant Energy is currently recruiting for exciting college internship opportunities for summer 2024. Join us as we work toward a clean energy future for the communities we serve!

Our internship program empowers you to apply your coursework to challenging and meaningful projects. Join one of 30+ interns between our Iowa and Wisconsin locations in this experience including an executive luncheon, volunteer events, site tours, networking activities and other opportunities. You’ll continue to develop your skills through meaningful work.

  • Location: Prairie Creek Generating Station, Cedar Rapids, IA (on-site)

  • Start Date: Monday, May 20th

What you will do

Alliant Energy is seeking an aspiring engineer pursuing (or recently graduated from) a degree in mechanical or chemical engineering to assist the Generation Engineering team.

You will report to the Prairie Creek Generating Station located in Cedar Rapids, IA. The role assists the principal performance engineer and consists of a mixture of hands-on work (such as thermal performance testing, outage inspections and outage commissioning) and desk work (such as data analysis, preparing test reports, and spreadsheet data entry). You may be requested to travel to support other facilities across our fleet (IA and WI).

Working within the power stations will require wearing multiple forms of PPE (provided, except for safety steel capped boots); physical exertion in a hot, possibly dirty/dusty environment, climbing stairs, standing on gratings and handling bulky equipment.

Qualifications:

  • We are looking for students or recent graduates with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, process engineering, mechatronics engineering, computer science or related

  • Currently holding a GPA of 2.75 or higher

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have an active interest and desire to learn about the power industry

  • Have completed or be currently enrolled in dynamics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, power plant systems or related classes

  • Have access to a reliable vehicle to travel to locations outside of Cedar Rapids. Anticipated travel is 20%. Overnight stays may also be required on occasion.

  • Have availability for occasional early starts and long days

  • Have availability 40-45 hours/week
