The pharmacy intern will assist pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in filling prescriptions and serving customers. The intern will review and monitor medications and orders for safety and efficacy. Interns prepare labels and dispenses medications for patients in accordance to the physicians’ prescriptions and also follow the government regulations related to dispensing of drugs and narcotics. He must also maintain the required records of dispensing as determined by state and federal law. Pharmacy interns may compound medications by following standard formulas and processes like weighing, measuring and mixing chemicals and will assist in maintaining the systems that charge or credit for medications. Interns may be asked to answer queries and give information to customers on a drug, its side effects, dosage and storage. Interns will follow procedures of storage, quality assurance, security, and disposal of hazardous materials.
Education: Currently enrolled in at least the first professional year of study in an accredited college or school of Pharmacy. Registration with Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of employment as a Pharmacy Intern. Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.
