Alliant Energy Intern – Electrical Engineering (Summer 2020 - Mason City, IA) in Mason City, Iowa

4637BRJob Responsibilities:Electrical Engineering Interns will be working on projects and apply coursework knowledge in Mason City, Iowa, in the IPL Distribution Engineering Department. This position will mirror actual distribution engineering work. It will provide a great opportunity to learn from a senior distribution engineer on how projects are scoped and approved for work. You will balance budgetary needs with an aggressive replacement timeline. There will also be the benefit of working in the field with an almost 50:50 balance of being at a desk and working in the field:

  • Summer project will consist of identifying all distribution conductors of a certain type which is at the end of its operating life.

  • Projects will need to be created to help Alliant Energy understand the extent of the work required to replace this conductor.

  • To finish this project effectively, Alliant Energy mapping/meter data and load flow simulations will be used.

  • Visits to the field will be required for the project analysis.

  • Start Date: May 18th or May 26th, 2020

  • We are looking for students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Currently holding a GPA of 2.75 or higher

  • Must relocate to Mason City - Relocation bonus provided

  • Able to be flexible and willing to be in the field


  • Self-motivated attitude and results-oriented

  • Previous professional or internship experience related to this position

  • Completed, or currently enrolled in Power classes, or related

  • Leadership, club and/or organizational involvement

  • An active interest, fresh ideas and a desire to learn about the utility industry

  • Capable of working independently

  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment
