Nurse Intern

Full Time Temporary

Qualifications:

  • Completed 3rd year and enrolled into 4th year of an accredited baccalaureate school of nursing program

  • Course completion for Nursing Assistant

  • Active on Direct Care Worker Registry

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Mandatory Reporter training required (provided on the job if necessary)

The nurse internship program is available to 3rd year nursing students enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing degree program. Through preceptored training, the nurse intern will progress, in a careful and measured manner, to orient to the skills and knowledge necessary in providing nursing care for patients in the area selected and accepted for the internship. Areas of availability include clinic, med-surg, ICU, emergency department, surgery, home care/hospice and OB. Upon completion of the nursing internship program the nurse intern may remain employed during their 4th and final year of the nursing degree program as a PRN employee serving in the role as a CNA for RMC.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Student Nurse Intern:

  • Acquires knowledge of the patient’s current condition through shift report

  • Performs patient related services as directed

  • Provides personal care assistance (bathing, grooming, feeding, and toileting) for patients for which training and experience have provided the necessary degree of skill

  • Assists patients with ambulation, transferring, and turning in bed

  • Obtains and documents vital signs, I/O, weights, and meal percentage eaten

  • Obtains capillary blood glucose readings

  • Answers call lights and performs patient rounding

  • Documents all patient care completed including hygiene cares, patient activity and patient rounding

  • Assists with patient safety practices

  • Prepares patients for meals; serves and collects trays; assists in setting up and feeding patients;

serves fresh water and nourishment when indicated

  • Provides for comfort of patients

  • Assists in preparing patients for tests

  • Observes, reports and records any changes in signs, symptoms and conditions of the patient

  • Communicates patient needs, serves as a patient advocate

  • Communicates effectively with medical staff, hospital and department members, patients and families

  • Assists in infection control and quality assurance activities

  • Participates in Student Nurse Intern activities, inservice education programs, staff meetings as directed

  • May request observation time in areas of interest to which the Student Nurse Intern is not assigned
