Job Description

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs has an internship opening for a Museum Education Assistant.

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is a state agency with oversight of the following areas: the State Historical Society of Iowa, the State Historic Preservation Office, the Iowa Arts Council, Produce Iowa - State Office of Film and Media Production, and beginning in 2020, the state’s interim Humanities Council. Together, these divisions strive to fulfill the

mission to empower Iowans to build and sustain culturally vibrant communities by connecting to the people, places and points of pride that define our state. Internship Purpose and Goals

To assist the State Historical Museum of Iowa museum education team with educational programming, including but not limited to developing educational materials for National History Day in Iowa and assisting with creating and leading programs throughout the summer semester.

Description of work:

  • Intern will work a hybrid schedule, and will come to the State Historical Museum of Iowa to help with programming in-person: June 12-16, June 28, July 12, 2023.

  • Assist with in-person workshops and day camps including Junior Curator Day Camp, Innovative Iowans and Young Writers Workshop.

  • Conduct research to assist with creating educational materials for National History Day in Iowa.

  • Help create and develop digital educational programs and events for a variety of different audiences.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Pursuing a degree in history, education, or related field of study in museum studies or the humanities. Have an interest in education and museums. Must conduct oneself in a mature/professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision. Ability to lift 40 lbs., and use step ladders.

This is a non-merit internship position with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
