Responsibilities

PNNL is seeking interns for assignments within the National Security Internship Program (NSIP). The Emerging Threats & Technologies Division is looking for individuals who have a passion for solving critical national challenges using advanced techniques. The intern will be given an opportunity to be presented with complex problems in national security, energy, and science; apply cutting-edge research to make our nation safer and stronger.

Positions are available in Richland, WA and Seattle, WA, based on business need. Positions may also be performed remotely or on campus at PNNL based on business need.

Diverse Focus Areas: Your internship can be in one of eight technical groups. Cyber Analysis and Analytics, Cyber Resilience Foundations, Cyber Risk Reduction, Global Research Analysis, Global Security Technology and Policy, Security Operations, Secure Systems Optimization, or Mission Alignment.

Cyber Analysis and Analytics

Providing critical analysis, analytics, and insights to enhance situational awareness and widen the aperture of threat awareness to high-consequence systems on a national scale. Deploying sensors and other technologies to characterize our nation’s critical infrastructure and networks, assimilating and processing data in near real-time to identify anomalies, latent and emerging threats. Developing and deploying novel, first-of-its-kind information tools and algorithms to analyze diverse data and access previously unattainable information, providing international impact and streamlining previously labor-intensive workflows.

Cyber Resilience Foundations

Providing mission-driven cybersecurity research and development to enable data-driven and mathematically sound characterization and predictive understanding of cyber-physical systems under adverse conditions. Developing detection and mitigation tools for control systems to provide cyber threat intelligence to U.S. critical infrastructures.

Cyber Risk Reduction

Stewarding cybersecurity research and development for evaluation, assessment, identification, and system support. Working with system owners and operators to identify risks and possible weaknesses and to mitigate and respond to cyber threats more efficiently and effectively. Equipping decision makers and frontline cybersecurity professionals with the tools and research necessary to evaluate how new technologies will affect the balance of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their systems.

Global Research Analysis

Providing international technology assessments, cybersecurity, and research and development solutions related to ensuring the continued peaceful use of new technology while detecting, preventing, and countering proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Reaching across PNNL to gather, analyze, and evaluate information from a variety of sources to determine a recommended course of action. Integrating diverse scientific, engineering, and analysis expertise to identify and solve complex problems that have a broad impact on PNNL and the nation.

Global Security Technology and Policy

Examining the dynamic challenges that sit at the nexus of law, policy, economics, trade, and technology to lead high-impact programs and drive meaningful change worldwide. Applying core competencies in national security law and policy analysis, international capacity building, stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and technology integration to support decision makers operating across the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cyber domains.

Security Systems Optimization

Keeping PNNL’s environment secure while evolving with new technological advances. Maintaining proficiency in security disciplines such that information is properly controlled, transmitted, safeguarded, or destroyed. Anticipating, monitoring, evaluating, and scaling strategic direction in response to evolving sponsor and mission needs. Providing programmatic and operational oversight of PNNL’s secure operations.

• Disciplines: Cybersecurity, IT Operations, Cloud

Mission Alignment

Bringing together senior technical and strategic advisors as a division-level advisory body to help tune and execute strategy through dedicated leadership. Working across the division’s capability areas to capture emerging programmatic opportunities, coach and mentor staff on strategy and business development, support the development and execution of division strategy, and develop strategic new sponsor relationships.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be matriculated/enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university.

• Minimum GPA of 3.30 is required.

Additional Information

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a future security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.

Due to business needs and client space, US Citizenship is required.
