Job Description

This position is an unpaid internship.

The Iowa Insurance Division is now recruiting a highly motivated intern for our Market Regulation Bureau who is interested in insurance regulatory compliance. The Market Regulation Bureau enforces Iowa insurance statutes and regulations providing consumer protection to the public against unlawful, incompetent, or dishonest market conduct. The Market Regulation Bureau also assists consumers in finding answers to their insurance questions.

A compliance intern within the Market Regulation Bureau reviews consumer complaints, analyzes insurance company and producer conduct, and assists in investigating violations of insurance laws, including the Insurance Trade Practices Act, Iowa Code Chapter 507B and the Insurance Producers Law, Iowa Code Chapter 522B. This intern will focus primarily on insurance related investigations but will work in concert with a team of analysts who are devoted to the investigation and resolution of consumer complaints as well as enforcement of the consumer protection statutes and regulations in the insurance markets.

This intern in the Market Regulation Bureau will assist in the investigation of complaints to identify unfair, deceptive, or unlawful conduct by insurance companies, agents, adjusters, or administrators. This intern may assist with the following actions: Analyze all case-related information Gather evidentiary documents Conduct interviews of involved parties Prepare detailed investigative reports Review company websites and marketing materials The internship is located in Downtown Des Moines and involves from 30-40 hours per week. Work hours will occur during the 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday work week. This internship is unpaid but may be structured to fit your school's guidelines to be used for college credit and/or work study, depending upon the requirements of your school.

The intern holding this position must be able to take and accurately apply general instructions, be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated and successful in following assignments to completion, proficient in computer skills, able to efficiently and effectively review and organize documentation, and possess excellent analytical ability. The individual selected for this position will have excellent writing, speaking and interpersonal skills, convey a professional presence, and have the willingness to learn federal and state insurance laws and guidelines. This position requires confidentiality and discretion, and due to the accessibility to sensitive material a criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
