Dart Data Analyst Intern in Des Moines, Iowa

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Business Intelligence Manager, the Data Analyst Intern will collect, organize, and maintain data sets. The Data Analyst Intern conducts quantitative analysis and research to evaluate and report transit system performance, and will also will support DART's use of business intelligence tools and data visualizations. This is a paid internship ($15/hr) located in Des Moines, Iowa that would begin in Spring Semester 2023 (15 hours/week) and extend through the summer (30 hours/week). This position can be extended into the 2023-2024 calendar year. Opportunity for hybrid work, upon agreement with the Business Intelligence Manager.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING (OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED AS NEEDED):

  • Organization: Monitor work processes and report progress toward goals. Support organizational change.

  • Analysis: Under direction, conduct quantitative analysis and research to evaluate and report performance in support of decision-making. Document and maintain analysis, methods, processes and systems. Engagement and advocacy: Enable, support, and encourage use of data in decision-making. Seek opportunities to increase the use of data through improved access. Engage internal and external partners in the development, use and integration of data. Use data to support presentations and guidance to internal and external groups.

  • Data: collect, organize, and maintain data sets using best practices, including but not limited to designing data tables, applying data validation, and implementing procedures to support data needs. Assess data for accuracy, anomalies and completeness. As issues arise, identify problems and propose solutions, with Manager input as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of data visualization software, specifically Microsoft Power BI

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and/or other spreadsheet and database platforms including pivot tables, look up functions, and simulations

  • Knowledge of personal computers and current office software programs for word processing, email, spreadsheets, and databases

  • Ability to concisely present findings and make recommendations

  • Ability to research, compile, and analyze complex data and form sound conclusions

  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform work activities with accuracy to meet deadlines, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Education

  • Current college student entering their second semester junior year pursuing a degree in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, or Computer Science is desired. Other majors will be considered if candidates have relevant experience or coursework that indicates analytical skills.

Physical Demands:

On a normal workday, this position requires:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing and/or walking

  • Frequent use of hands, fingers and arms in operations requiring constant handling of paper documents, computing and entering data using a computer keyboard

  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less to read and enter numerical data

  • The ability to hear normal verbal conversation with or without corrective devices to communicate with co-workers and customers

  • The ability to speak and read the English language clearly and concisely
