Job Description

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking to fill aNON-PAIDCommunications Internship to assist the state.

Internship Purpose and Goals

  • To develop and implement detailed marketing plans for several Department of Cultural Affairs programs or special events. These start-to-finish plans could include any or all of the following: press releases, social media updates, blog posts, online videos, paid advertisements and evaluation surveys. For ideas, please familiarize yourself with our website, iowaculture.gov, plus the Facebook pages for the Department of Cultural Affairs as well as its three divisions: Iowa Arts Council, Produce Iowa, and State Historical Society of Iowa.

  • To write several news articles or blog posts (400 to 800 words apiece) about Iowa art, history, film or culture for the Iowa Culture News Wire, which distributes content for publication in nearly 300 newspaper members of the Iowa Newspaper Association.

Time Commitment

  • Duration: Fall Semester

  • Frequency: Minimum of ­­5 hours per week, unpaid. Schedule may vary from week to week, and most work can be done either remotely or at the Department of Cultural Affairs office.

Duties and Essential Activities

  • Conduct news interviews, via phone or in person

  • Write articles and blog posts, as assigned

  • Develop and implement marketing plans for various programs and special events

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Some training in journalism, marketing or mass communications

  • Familiarity with social media

Training

  • The intern will work with a supervisor to report, write and polish content for publication. Most story topics will be assigned, but fresh ideas are welcome.

  • The intern will work closely with a supervisor to develop marketing plans that fit the general tone and style of the department's current marketing strategies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
