Overview

MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit Catholic medical centers in Des Moines West Des Moines Newton and Centerville and two specialty hospitals – MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in Clive (965 beds total) – along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care pediatric internal medicine and specialty clinics. Responsibilities

  • Prepares patient drug orders as follows (with proper checks performed by a pharmacist as required by law): enters patient prescription orders into the computer; selects correct medication, strength and dosage form; prepares labels; selects and affixes auxiliary labels to medications as appropriate and legally required; counts, measures, weighs & pours medications; documents doses dispensed; and files medication orders.

  • Cleans counters, medication drawers, carts, shelves, and equipment as needed.

  • Assists the pharmacists with audits (e.g. allergy, weight, etc.).

  • Enters and fills stock bags and fills stock requisitions for other departments.

  • Accurately processes and restocks medications for departments utilizing automated dispensing systems, i.e. Pyxis/Acudose

  • Performs a variety of medication inventory-related tasks including: communication of stock utilization and ordering needs; assisting with reordering; checking of expiration dating with alerts to pharmacists when needed; and rotating and restocking.

  • Compounds and labels extemporaneous liquid and solid products for patients according to procedure.

  • Answers telephone and process requests according to procedures.

  • Participates in the training of new technicians.

  • Charges and credits individual patient accounts.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Current enrollment in a pharmacy school or program or proof of verbal commitment to a pharmacy school or program.

  • Must be registered as a pharmacy intern with the State of Iowa at the time of hire or registered as a Technician in Training for up to 12 months until able to apply for Intern status after first day of pharmacy school or program. May also be registered as a Certified Pharmacy Technician until Intern status can be obtained.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three (3) months of hire.
