Renewable Energy Group Intern, Construction Engineer in Ames, Iowa

Our comprehensive,12-week paid internship programgives you the opportunity to test your skills working for the nation’s leading producer of cleaner fuels and developer of renewable chemicals. This internship will begin May 18, 2020 and end August 7, 2020.


The purpose of this position is to assist with construction projects. This position involves a variety of construction and engineering duties with a focus on supporting the construction or upgrade of biodiesel plants.


Key Accountabilities:

Project Support

• Help ensure a safe working environment on jobsites through participation in safety training and site observation visits

• Assist in obtaining all licenses, permits, and documents necessary to start, build and complete construction projects

• Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive project information

Support Function

• Complete job set-up and coordinate pre-install project and closeout meetings

• Draft purchase orders

• Assist with development of estimates, schedules, and work plans

• Maintain project records including scanning for electronic archival

• Assist with construction office administrative duties

Coordination and Review Function

• Help verify, perform, and maintain punch list

• Obtain receipt of close out materials

• Assist in the development of contract change orders and distribute approved contract changes to contractors and vendors

• Help track/control quality, costs, and schedule

• Assist with review of project proposal to determine budget, construction means and methods, staffing, allotment of resources, and project schedule

• Prepare and maintain a master cost breakdown, and learn cost control methods

• Stay abreast of material delivery dates and keep others informed on changes that affect the project schedule

• Coordinate project reviews, progress and team meetings and distribute meeting notes

Other frequent duties:

• Use of work tools to complete specific assigned tasks

• Assist in coordination of activities of government agencies

• Expedite delayed material delivery

• Assist in reviewing monthly pay applications

Perform other duties as assigned


Education Required:Pursuing a bachelor’s degree - Construction Engineering or related degree

**Mechanical emphasis preferred

**Senior or Junior status required

Preferred Experience:Related experience in clubs, course work, or internships or past jobs.

Skills Required:

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Project, Visio)

Strong technical background

Bluebeam Suite

Special skills or knowledge preferred:

Knowledge of project management

Knowledge of biodiesel production and related processes
