The City of Ames Public Works Department is now accepting applications for Temporary Summer 2025 Employment!

Examples of Essential Job Functions

Public Works - Traffic:

Individuals interested in this position will assist the Traffic Division with summer maintenance activities. Examples of work activities include; street painting by operating ride-on and walk behind paint machines (approx. 80% of time), applying thermoplastic pavement markings (approx. 10% of time), tree trimming (5% of time), setting up traffic control for special events (approx. 5% of time), various other projects. Individuals interested in this position will have to lift paint buckets weighing up to 50 pounds. The primary work location is 2207 Edison St. Work hours are Monday-Friday 7 AM-3 PM. There will be a few days where we will work 5 AM – 1 PM.

Public Works - Streets:

Individuals interested in this position will assist work crews with street and storm sewer maintenance. Examples of work activities include removal of street materials including asphalt and/or concrete with shovels, brooms, jack hammers, ect. Working outside in a dusty environment, on streets under traffic control. CDL class A license preferred but not required. The primary work location is 2207 Edison St. Work hours are Monday - Friday 7AM-3PM unless that it is mutually agreed then the hours will be Monday - Thursday 5AM -3PM.

Public Works - Utility Maintenance:

Individuals interested in this position will assist crews working on fire hydrants, operating water valves, and working with crew members on sewer jet/truck (performing sewer maintenance). Performing manual labor, weed eating, painting fire hydrants, and helping mark utility lines. The primary work location is 2207 Edison St. Work hours are Monday - Friday 7 AM - 3 PM.

Qualifications

Required: Must be 18 and have a valid driver's license at time of hire.

Preferred: Previous experience in a labor or construction position.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of hand tools and equipment commonly used in construction or general labor. Ability to deal effectively with the public in high stress situations; ability to work with other City employees and the general public ability to work under general direction; ability to read and interpret a maintenance plan; ability to prepare reports related to daily tasks; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; skill in the use of a computer and related software.

Supplemental Information

Selection Process:

The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check and motor vehicle record check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

Physical and Environmental Characteristics:

Required Physical Activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Physical Characteristics of Work: The work involves sitting 0 to 5 percent of the time; sitting and using arm/leg controls 10 to 40 percent of the time; standing (but not walking) 0 to 35 percent of the time; standing and walking 10 to 35 percent of the time; frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds; routinely lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds; routinely lifting objects from 25 to 50 pounds; and routinely lifting objects over 50 pounds.

Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for those working with machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, or mills where visual focus is required within arm's reach. Additionally, employees working in or near roadways must have sufficient vision to maintain situational awareness and ensure their own safety, as well as that of coworkers and the motoring public.

Environmental Conditions: Work is performed indoors and/or outdoors, with exposure to extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system or skin, and oils. Employees may be required to wear a respirator and work in confined spaces, darkness or poor lighting conditions, trenches, and/or isolation. Additionally, employees will work in or near roadways, requiring awareness of moving motor vehicles. Proper traffic control measures must be set up and followed to maintain a safe working environment.

Equipment Essential to the Job: A variety of motor vehicles and heavy equipment, including pickup trucks, dump trucks, aerial boom trucks, end loaders, and backhoes; a variety of printed materials, including memos, blueprints, instructions, maps, and schedules; a variety of measurement and diagnostic tools and equipment, including tape measures, scales, levels, and squares; general-purpose maintenance equipment, including brooms, shovels, cleaning equipment and chemicals, and extension cords; various welding equipment; hydraulic, air, and water hoses; power and hand tools, including grinders, drills, saws, air compressors, pumps, screwdrivers, and wrenches. A variety of safety equipment and clothing, including dust filters, earplugs, first-aid kits, gloves, safety goggles, raincoats, gas monitors, hard hats, and safety vests. Personal computers and peripheral equipment; some office and communication equipment, including telephones, handheld radios, iPads, calculators, and inspection equipment.

The City of Ames participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant’s Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
