The City of Ames has an opening for a Water and Pollution Control Department Marketing Intern. Full-time hours would be available during school breaks and summer and part-time hours (approximately 10 - 15 hours per week) during the school year. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday between 8:00am-5:00pm. Some events will require weekend work hours. Start date is anticipated to be December 1, 2017.
The main responsibility of the marketing intern is to help continue development and implementation of a social marketing plan designed to encourage water conservation as an everyday way of life. This position offers a student in marketing, public relations, advertising, graphic design, or related field, an opportunity to use their talents and creative ideas to propel a real-world marketing application. The intern must become knowledgeable in the targeted field in order to prepare them to best reach the customer base and learn to adapt to different types of customers. The intern will be relied upon for new marketing concepts which they will "sell" to management. Once approved, they will execute the marketing plan and design and order promotional materials. There are multiple events where the intern will help prepare for the event by completing tasks such as loading the trailer with promotional items, filling it with water and ice, and prepare any educational material for presenting at outreach events in our community. The intern works directly with senior management to coordinate activities and maintain the program budget.

Examples of Essential Job Functions: The selected candidate will update the Smart Water strategic marketing plan as well as participate in the preparation of newspaper, radio and television advertisements, Channel 12 TV programs, press releases surrounding public outreach events, web page materials, promotional brochures that target different customer groups regarding conservation, educational signage, newsletter articles and columns, updating and maintaining the "Smart Water" Facebook and Twitter pages, and the development and staffing of educational activities at various venues. Other tasks may include assisting with organizing, prepping the water trailer with water, ice and other items as needed, staffing and promotion of city-wide events such as open houses, events targeting Iowa State University students, and collaborative programs with other city departments to promote conservation throughout the community. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

Education and Experience: Preferred educational background includes areas such as marketing, graphic design, corporate communications, advertising, consumer behavior, public education, and related courses. Skills necessary for the position include Microsoft Word, Publisher, Adobe Illustrator, and InDesign. Experience with various social media platforms preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of current marketing methods and strategies for encouraging behavioral changes and resource conservation.
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly and confidently communicate information verbally and in writing. Skilled in the creation of brochures, flyers, infographics, clip art, and other visual design elements necessary to achieve the goals of the marketing plan.
Ability to work independently. Ability to work cooperatively with others in a teaming environment. Is dependable and able to adhere to an agreed upon schedule. Able to drive a small pickup truck pulling a small trailer. Ability to use common office equipment and tools. Ability to speak persuasively to the public and to local officials.
Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving history at the time of hire. Must maintain these during the period of employment.
Required Physical Activities: Standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.
Physical Characteristics of Work: Sedentary work requiring exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking or standing is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Ability to stand for up to one hour at a time and ability to walk up to 200 feet unassisted. Ability to carry up to 40 lbs for short durations.
Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspection), using measurement devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.
Environmental Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work). The worker will be required to attend activities and events outdoors and may be exposed to ambient heat, sunlight, rain, wind, etc.; however the worker will not generally be exposed to winter weather.
Examples of Equipment Used on the Job: Computer and peripheral equipment, photographic equipment. Software use includes knowledge of: major word processor, layout and design, presentation and photography programs. General office equipment and tools such as phones, faxes, copies, and others.Automobiles such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, and small trailers.
Selection Process: The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check and motor vehicle record check.
