The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for Temporary Seasonal Employment. These are temporary positions working from May 2024 through November 2024 flexible days and hours with an average between 10-40 hours per week.

Directly accountable to Parks and Facilities Supervisor and/or Parks Maintenance Workers and adjunctly accountable to Parks and Facilities Superintendent, and the Parks and Recreation Director.

Parks Structural Maintenance: Individuals interested in this position will do small construction, playground maintenance, garbage and debris cleanup. Secondary job duties could include string trimming turf, mowing turf, tree trimming and chipping of debris, gardening and other duties assigned. Work locations include 700 East 13th Street but work will take place throughout the City's Parks and other City facilities as needed. Work hours are Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM. (work hours include 30 minute unpaid lunch)

Furman Aquatic Center Maintenance: Individuals interested in this position will perform a variety of tasks to maintain the facilities at the Furman Aquatic Center. General pool maintenance, cleaning, scrubbing, vacuuming, skimming and power washing of pool basins, water slides, decks and seating areas, general landscape maintenance of pool areas including pulling and treating weeds, garbage and debris cleanup, and other duties assigned. The primary work location is 1635 13th Street, Monday - Sunday 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM. Number of days per week may be flexible and anyone desiring more hours may be able to assist in the Parks, Right of Way, Athletic Field, or Homewood Maintenance positions if mutually agreeable.

Landscape and Flower Bed Maintenance: Individuals interested in this position will do general landscape and gardening maintenance for the parks and right of way flower beds including watering, weeding, mulching, fertilizer application, trimming, garbage and debris cleanup, and other duties assigned. The primary work location is 700 East 13th Street, but work will take place throughout the City's Parks and other City facilities as needed. Work hours may be flexible, typically Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. (work hours include 30 minute unpaid lunch)

Athletic Field Maintenance: Individuals interested in this position will complete daily tasks to prepare the softball and baseball fields at River Valley Park, Brookside, and O'Neil Parks as well as other athletic fields within the parks. Duties include dragging, chalking, setting bases, painting lines, and moving goals. Other maintenance duties may include general landscape maintenance including mowing and string trimming turf, tree trimming and chipping of debris, gardening, garbage and debris cleanup, small construction projects and other duties assigned. The primary work location is 1125 East 13th Street and 1335 6th Street, but work will take place throughout the City's Parks and other City facilities as needed. Work hours are flexible to cover the league schedules and required tasks, typically Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 2:30 PM (work hours incl de 30 minute unpaid lunch) and Sunday 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM.

Minimum Qualifications -Must be at least 18 years of age and have valid driver's license. -Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. -Previous experience is preferred

Knowledge and Skills -Demonstrate strong decision-making skills, initiative, dependability, organization, enthusiasm, leadership, and a desire to serve the public. -Be physically capable to perform work required, under various outdoor conditions. -Ability to take direction from superiors and be able to complete duties with or without supervision. -Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair work. -Skill in the use and care of tools and other equipment used to complete varying tasks.

Physical and Environmental Characteristics Required Physical Activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions.

Physical Characteristics of Work: The work involves sitting 0 to 5 percent of the time; sitting and using arm/leg controls 10 to 40 percent of the time; standing (but not walking) 0 to 35 percent of the time; standing and walking 10 to 35 percent of the time; frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds; routinely lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds; routinely lifting objects from 25 to 50 pounds; and routinely lifting objects over 50 pounds.

Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals with machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws or mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach.

Environmental Conditions: The work is performed inside and/or outside and includes being exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin, oils, may be required to wear a respirator, may work in confined spaces, darkness or poor lighting
